TRICOLOR ROAD SIGNAL LAMP The base and shades in brown lacquered sheet metal, the circular lights in tinted glass. c. 1960. Height. 91 cm; Width. 35.5 cm; Depth. 30 cm. France's first traffic light was installed in 1923 at the intersection of the Boulevards Saint-Denis and Sébastopol. The newspaper Le Petit Parisien described it as a "big automobile lighthouse" with the word "Halte!" in red letters set off against a frosted glass. Traffic lights were not introduced until 1935.
