France's first traffic light was installed in 1923 at the intersection of the Boulevards Saint-Denis and Sébastopol.
The newspaper Le Petit Parisien described it as a "big automobile lighthouse" with the word "Halte!" in red letters set off against a frosted glass. Traffic lights were not introduced until 1935.
