PLAQUE NOMINATIVE DE LA RUE DE L'OUEST, PARIS Enameled Volvic lava, rectangular shape, inscribed "Rue de l'Ouest" in white letters on a blue background, framed in green. Second half of the 19th century. Height. 35 cm; Width. 60 cm Slight chips. In 1805, Napoleon 1st made it compulsory for communes to affix iron plaques painted in oil, indicating street names. But the oil faded too quickly. In 1844, Claude-Philibert Barthelot de Rambuteau, Prefect of the Seine, prescribed the use in Paris of rectangular plaques in enamelled Volvic lava (frost-resistant), showing street names in white on a blue background with green outlines.
