Brass, oval shape, engraved with the inscription "Louis Char - Lot 514
Brass, oval shape, engraved with the inscription "Louis Charles - Fl-DE-CRICS - 6 rue d'Enfer & 111 Bd St Michel - 5e Arrondissement - Paris (Seine)". c. 1900. Height. 9 cm; Width. 14.5 cm. Rue d'Enfer is a former thoroughfare on the left bank of Paris. Part of the street was removed when the boulevard Saint-Michel was built in 1859. The remaining part was renamed "rue Denfert-Rochereau" in 1878. The origin of this name is thought to be a distortion of "via Infera", as opposed to rue Saint-Jacques, which was then called via Superior. Another hypothesis links it to the "iron gate" of Philippe Auguste's enceinte.
