EXPOSITION UNIVERSELLE, PARIS, 1889 - Lot 143
EXPOSITION UNIVERSELLE, PARIS, 1889 ORIGINAL EIFFEL TOWER RIVET. Height. 7 cm; Width. 3.5 cm; Depth. 3.5 cm. The rivets were hot-set by a team of four "riveters": one to heat the rivet, a second to hold it in place, another to form the head and a final one to complete the fixing with a sledgehammer. The joining of the tower's four pillars on December 7, 1887 required incredible precision in the perfect alignment of the holes in the metal beams fixed together by these rivets. This was achieved, in part, by the use of sand boxes, the flow of which allowed a piston to be lowered, thus varying the inclination of each pillar.
